EL GRINGO

VOD releases now are quite entertaining. Scott Adkins stars in this Robert-Rodriguez-esque action romp that shouts “over-the-top” all over it but nonetheless entertains to the full brim. Heck, this might even be a full derivative of Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado but it’s a very good one for a “limited-cinema-release” movie feature. The movie’s director, Eduardo Rodriguez (no relation to the former, I think) is one up and coming visual visionary that will hopefully bring more of the sparks to the table. Scott Adkins is the new Van Damme, hail to old-skool machismo-guns-blazing riddled action movies! haha Search, Pirate and Download now!

Bilis! Agpas! Haste! +_+

By the way, you might get confused with Mel Gibson’s “Get the Gringo” since it has similarly the same title and relatively same2x release period. ADVICE: Get that also since it’s equally enjoyable if you like a WACKED out movie. I know, I do. haha

(Next stop is CURANDERO, E. Rodriguez’s horror masterpiece.)

yey!

MACHINE GUN PREACHER (I believe)

I don’t get it why critics are slammin’ Mr. Butler’s new film based on Sam Childers’ own life. As always they’re just too damn into the details of things, obsessing more into what ought to be avant-garde, more into what needs to be cool for their own helpless tastes for the different and the higher class. This mental twitch causes them to falter when providing effective reviews on films like this as most of the time they forget how it is to just sit back, relax and enjoy a movie for what it really is.

I know the movie won’t win any oscars for its story but let’s be realistic, it is a movie based on the real-life experiences of Mr. Sam Childers a.k.a. the “Machine Gun Preacher” who’s life experiences are generally out of the ordinary but is usually a typical story for most movies nowadays. Again, the story’s not entirely new but it garners a good accolade for it being as genuine as it truly can get since it is basically “inspired by true events” (duh? hehe). Then again, we cannot fully say that the scriptwriters haven’t had supplanted additional scenes, or maybe even exaggerated some portions of the later’s life. But, hell, the fact that the protagonist is in Sudan and he’s survived every bit of it up until now means he’s authentically ‘into” the mission of being able to help out those people (obviously most of them) in need in those parts of the world whatever it takes. The movie may portray Sam feeling and looking like a big hero of sorts who uses his guns to do the talking and make a change but it also supplies in a good side of the turmoil the character underwent and this boldly shows that he’s just a regular guy trying to be a good one. For me, being a grade A badass, revolutionary, rebellious doesn’t mean the character’s all killer-no-lover; just one war-torn, war-shocked man that justifies the act of killing in order to save people (the end doesn’t justify the means), but for this argument here, I beg to differ and say “if it’s something that you can’t fully control even if you did all you can and it still shows that your experiences seem to point out that God’s the one leading it out to you, then by any means necessary, in order to help the downtrodden and oppressed - do it. It is remarkably justifiable.

I believe the movie just gets into you as it shows how people can normally be and how one person, who strives for the best can be a huge difference to the world even if the methods he’s perpetuating isn’t of the norm. Gerard Butler’s acting here is by far the best I’ve seen from him as he’s handled almost every type of emotion with color and life. The supporting cast played by Michelle Monaghan as his wife and his BFF (in the film), Michael Shannon surely makes up for the good acting chops showed by Butler as they’ve also acted wonderfully. The story makes up a good sense of feeling a circus of emotions that initially starts with disgust and end up with the good feeling of awe brought about by redemption.

Butler’s character, Sam, starts out to be super-rough on the edges as he’s a typical biker/bad-dude who doesn’t give a damn to anyone who crosses him and simply whoops their asses up for his own “needs”. He’s an ex-con who’s been given a second chance after literally stabbing a thief to death while he was high on coke. He then learns how to stand right up again with the help of the Words of the Lord. Slowly, he gains a good momentum in life and eagerly lifts up his whole persona and changes every bit of his bad bones, changing into a person his family can depend on (or maybe not until he sees Sudan. hehehe). He’s then plunged into Africa (Sudan) with his own voluntary will and easily learns how it is hard to live there and die easily. Everything from here on, works like a emotional-roller-coster-ride as the audience is set to feel almost all types of emotional stimulations from being teary-eyed to being anxious and fearful for the characters. Action sequences are a bit scarce but all-in-all deliver quite well. With bullets flying all over the scenarios the movie simply offers a good dose of action and intensity. On the other hand, drama-wise, people who want to get iffy and swelled up can have a good one with this film as it fervently showcases good dramatic, sweeping scenes from both the setting in Sudan and the US.

In the end, the movie’s very worthy of you time, maybe not a very great one to say the least, but it seems to deliver what it aims to offer to the audience - a good time full of suspenseful moments and a wonderful way to get the inner “emo” in you. This is a pretty kickass movie that serves a plus - a lesson for us all: that being bad isn’t the end, and taking chances with the aid of the Man up above is the way to go. All you need is to believe and never stop pushing.

Finally, (i need to say this, haha) when reaching an impasse in your life you gotta do what you gotta do. No more excuses.

Also, the bitchin’ professional film critics usually do is actually a passe form of expression as they tend to be unreliable with each passing day. Better watch the movies you think are good and be your own judge. Happy movie hunting!
